The VNC protocol is a remote desktop protocol that allows users to access and control computers remotely. It uses the TCP/IP network layer to communicate between client and server. The VNC viewer is a program that allows users to connect with remote computers using the VNC protocol.

The first version of the VNC was developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1987 as an extension of their Remote Job Entry (RJE) product. The original purpose of this product was for technicians to access and control computer systems remotely from their workstation, thus reducing travel time and cost for them.
