What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. It is caused by differences in the brain and can be associated with genetic and environmental factors. ASD is a spectrum disorder, meaning that it affects each person differently and can range from mild to severe symptoms.

Symptoms of ASD typically appear in the first three years of a child's life and can include difficulties with social communication and interaction, restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests, and differences in learning, moving, or paying attention. Some people with ASD may have advanced skills in certain areas, while others may require significant support in their daily lives.

There is no medical test to diagnose ASD, and doctors look at a child's behavior and development to make a diagnosis. Early intervention and treatment can greatly improve a child's development and quality of life, so it is important to seek help as soon as possible if you suspect your child may have ASD.

ASD affects people of all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and is more common in boys than girls. While there is no known cure for ASD, there are many treatments and interventions that can help manage symptoms and support individuals with ASD to reach their full potential.
